PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION STUDENT LOANS SCHEME [SLS] FOR 2010

  1. Applications are invited from pre-service students wishing to be assisted through the Public Service Commission Student Loan Scheme [SLS]. The following details are relevant and interested students are advised to familiarise themselves with these before applying-:

    The Student Loan Scheme is an affirmative action programme by the Government of Fiji designed to assist disadvantaged families who cannot otherwise access tertiary training education.


  2. CRITERIA FOR SELECTION
    A student may apply to be assisted through the Student Loan Scheme if he/she is:
    1. A Fiji citizen
    2. Between the age of 18 to 25years
    3. Fully supported by parents or guardians whose combine annual income (from all sources) does not exceed $15,000 per annum; salary slips must be enclosed as evidence otherwise a Statutory Declaration signed by a JP or a Commissioner of Oaths has to be included in the application.
    4. Students will only be considered if they have secured a place in the Institution they wish to study in.
    5. Undertaking study in a field considered by the Public Service Commission as appropriate to the human resource needs of the nation
    6. Form 7 and Foundation Courses will not be sponsored in this scheme.
    7. Only students meeting the above criteria will be considered.
    8. Students already on full scholarship and studying on Fiji Government awards, Public Service Commission, Fijian Affairs (except Foundation) and Multi Ethnic Affairs Scholarships will NOT be considered;

  3. TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS COVERED UNDER STUDENT LOAN SCHEME
    The students who meet the above criteria will be offered places in relevant programmes at the following institutions only:
    1. University of the South Pacific -
      BA/BEd/BSc/BCom/BA Agriculture BA or BSc GCED
    2. University of Fiji -
      BA/BSc/BCom/MBBS
    3. Fiji National University
      College of Medicine,Nursing & Health Sciences-
      MBBS, Diploma in Nursing


      College of Engineering,Science & Technology-
      Advance Diploma/Diploma/Trade Certificate


      College of Business, Hospitality & Tourism Studies -
      Diploma programmes


      Colege of Agriculture, Fisheries & Forestry-
      Diploma in Tropical Agriculture


      Corpus Christi Teachers College-
      Diploma Teaching programme


    4. Students will only be considered if they have secured a place in the Institution they wish to study in.

  4. SCOPE OF LOAN SCHEME
    The following annual income thresholds will be the 'cut-off' points for assistance available under the Student Loan Scheme:
    1. $0 - $6,000 : prescribed maximum study costs including tuition, books, travel and living allowance to a maximum of $6, 000 annually.
    2. $6, 001 - $9,00 :75% of tuition fees and book allowance and living allowance to a maximum of $4,500 annually.
    3. $9,001 - $15,000 :60% of tuition fee, book allowance and living allowance to a maximum of $3,600 annually.

    4. Maximum loan to any single recipient for one academic year will not exceed $6,000.


  5. APPLICATION FORMS CAN BE OBTAINED FROM:
    1. on website - www.psc.gov.fj
    2. Public Service Commission Scholarships Unit @ 61 Carnavon Street,Suva
    3. Commissioner Central, Commissioner Western & Commissioner Northern Offices, Divisional Education Offices, Provincial Administrator Offices
    4. The following documents must be attached:
      1. Recent Curriculum Vitae.
      2. Copies of original academic Transcripts.
      3. A full extract (A4 size) of birth certificate.
      4. A recent passport photo.
      5. Parents or guardians salary slips must be enclosed as evidence otherwise a Statutory Declaration signed by a JP or a Commissioner of Oaths.
      6. Offer letter from the institution of your choice.

  6. APPLICATIONS CLOSES ON 26th February, 2010.


  7. Incomplete & Late applications will NOT be considered.


  8. If you have not received any reply by 31st March, 2010 then your application has not been successful.
