1. Applications are invited from Pre-service students wishing to be assisted through the Public Service Commission Student Loan Scheme [SLS].  The following details are relevant and interested students are advised to familiarise themselves with these before applying:

The Student Loan Scheme is an affirmative action programme by the Government of Fiji designed to assist disadvantaged families who cannot otherwise access tertiary training education.

2. SELECTION CRITERIA

A student may apply to be assisted through the SLS if he/she is:

a) a Fiji citizen

b) between the age of 18 to 25 years

c) fully supported by parents or guardians whose combined annual income (from all sources) does not exceed $12,000.

d) Students will only be considered if they have secured a place in the Institution they wish to study in.

e.) Undertaking study in a field considered by the Public Service Commission as appropriate to the human resource needs of the nation

f.) Form 7 and Foundation Courses will not be sponsored under this scheme.

g.) Only students meeting the above criteria will be considered.

h.)Students serving a Bond or on full scholarship and studying on Fiji Government awards, Public Service Commission, Fijian Affairs (except Foundation) and Multi Ethnic Affairs Scholarships will NOT be considered;

3. TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS COVERED UNDER STUDENT LOAN SCHEME

The students who meet the above criteria will be offered places in relevant programmes at the following institutions only:
INSTITUTION COURSES
a. University of the South Pacific BA/BEd/BSc BA or BSc GCED (excluding BA  Agriculture and LLB)
b. Fiji Institute of Technology Advance Diploma/Diploma/Trade Certificate (excluding Dip. In Aircraft Engineering)
c. University of Fiji BA/BSc (excluding MBBS and LLB)
d. Fiji College of Agriculture  Diploma in Tropical Agriculture
e. Fiji School of Nursing  Diploma in Nursing

4. SCOPE OF LOAN SCHEME

The following annual income thresholds will be “cut-off” points for assistance available under the SLS:

a) $0 – 6,000:
prescribed maximum study costs including tuition, books, travel and living allowance to a maximum of $6,000 annually.

b) $6,000 - $9,000:
75% of tuition fees and book allowance and living allowance to a maximum of $4,500 annually.

c) $9,000 - $12,000:
60% of tuition fees, book allowance and living allowance to a maximum of $3,600 annually.

Maximum loan to a single recipient for one academic year will not exceed $6,000.

5. APPLICATION FOR LOAN

Students who meet the criteria should apply on the prescribed Student Loan Scheme Application Form available at:

  • PSC Scholarship Unit Office, 2nd Floor Rev. John Hunt House, Stewart Street, Suva.
  • Commissioners Central, Northern and Western offices, Provincial Administrators,  DOs Offices, Divisional Education and Divisional Youth &   Sports offices
  • Internet users can download forms from  :http//www.psc.gov.fj

7.     Incomplete & Late applications will NOT be considered.
