2009 Commonwealth Scholarships to the United Kingdom

The Fiji Government through the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the United Kingdom invites applications for awards tenable from October 2009.

Applicants should note that:

  1. Scholarships are granted for one year taught Masters or equivalent degrees
  2. Six months of clinical training in medicine or dentistry
  3. Doctoral degrees of up to three years duration
  4. One year research on a split-site basis, towards a PhD registered at a university in the candidate’s home country 

Applicants are encouraged to indicate their preferences and to make contact with appropriate institutions to obtain preliminary offers of admission which should be included in the application. Applicants must submit independent applications to their chosen institutions before December 31st,2008. The final decision on host institution will be made by the Commission.

Priority will be given to candidates whose area of work addresses the following categories which are part of Fiji’s priority areas of training:

    1. Growth
    2. Sustainable Agriculture
    3. Climate change
    4. Health
    5. Governance in Challenging Environments
    6. Future challenges and opportunities
    7. Poverty Alleviation
    8. Gender Equality

    Eligibility:

    1. Must be a citizen of Fiji
    2. Applicants should hold or expect to hold by the commencement date of study, a first degree of at least upper second-class honours level.
    3. Applicants should normally have graduated from a first degree or Masters programme.
    4. Should be 30 to 45 years of age as of date of commencement of study.
    5. The type of training applied for should be relevant to the applicant’s current employment
    6. Applicants should provide evidence of a satisfactory level of English competence, either by enclosing the result of a TOEFL (or any equivalent English proficiency examination) or by proving that they have completed a university program conducted mainly in English.

    Applicants must request at least three (3) confidential references (not testimonials) from two lecturers who had the taught the applicant in their previous training and one from their current employer. The references must be specifically related to the individual’s suitability for the planned studies and this is to be sent directly to the Scholarships Unit.

    NB. The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission is keen to ensure an equitable division of awards and strongly encourages women to apply.

    How to Apply

    1. Commonwealth Scholarship Preliminary Application Forms can be obtained from the Public Service Commission Scholarships Unit.
    2. Applications from Civil Servants must be submitted through their Permanent Secretary/Head of Department for their comments (this would be the employer’s assessment). Applications not assessed are not usually considered.

    Applicants must be prepared to submit six copies of the application form which should also have:

    1. six recent passport sized photographs.
    2. six certified copies of university transcripts.
    3. six certified copies of birth certificate or evidence of date of birth.
    4. six typed copies of a statement of not more than 200 words on the study plan and/or research and relate this to their future career.

    Candidates are encouraged to  download, save and complete electronic forms which should then be printed six times from the following website : www.psc.gov.fj as well as from www.cscuk.org.uk/apply/applyagency.asp rather than paper copy of the form.
