Loan Recovery Team is part of the Public Service Commission Scholarship Unit.
The main objective of the Loan Recovery team is to collect, monitor and follow up on students who owed money to the government through Student Loan Scheme and PSC Cost Sharing Scholarship Scheme.
Background of the Loan Recovery Team
The government of Fiji has been providing assistance to meritorious students since 1975 with scholarships and student loans.
Student Loans are given to those students who lose out on the scholarship.
Students who were awarded with a PSC scholarship (1/3rd Cost Sharing) are to repay at a rate of 10% of their gross income.
Students who were given a Student Loan (0% interest) are to repay at a rate of 20% of their gross income.
As the government continues to play its role in providing this assistance, very few students after graduating or dropping out come forward to honour the agreement they made when they signed their bond.
The Student Loan Recovery Team used to recover at a rate of 0.5 million per annum.
With reform in place the team has recovered 2.3 million in 2009, 3.0 million in 2010 and 3.3 million in 2011 respectively.
The team have projected to recover 3.5 million in 2012.
