REVIEW OF POLICIES TIMELY: CHAND

The current review and evaluation of Public Service Employment Policies and Practices is ongoing and is in line with the reforms implemented by Government, says Permanent Secretary for the Public Service Mr Parmesh Chand.

He adds the Commission has also resolved to review and modernize the minimum qualification requirements (MQR) for entry into and promotions in the civil service.

In view of the need to modernize such policies, the Public Service through its Employment Relations Division held a one day workshop to review the General Orders of 1993.

Director Employee Relations Division, Mrs Iva Tavai said there was a need to review certain procedures relating to staffing and other matters and to align them to the current decrees and policies that are in place.

With consultations ongoing to the amendments of the General Orders 1993, Mrs Tavai said there is a need to separate the General Orders into two sections for clarity of purpose.

The two sections of the amended General Orders would involve the Master Agreement which is a collective agreement between the Public Service and the Unions and the General Orders which would entail the Public Service’s Policies.

Workshop participants involved mid to senior management members from the 5 Divisions of the Public Service Commission.

The General Orders prescribes the terms and conditions of service of civil servants and the procedures that are needed to be followed in dealing with staffing and other matters in the Public Service.
